About Me

Leora Rachel Barkai

My name is Leora Barkai. I am currently 11 1/2 year old and in the sixth grade. I live in NJ and love school, singing, dancing and art. I have a sister and a brother and I love my family very much. My Bat Mitzvah is coming up this summer, I can't wait! My English birthday is July 25th and this year, my Hebrew Birthday, my actual Bat Mitzvah will be on July 13, (chuf gimel tamuz).

I decided instead of having a big party (and have to make a speech and have a huge crowd), I wanted instead to take a trip to a meaningful place that is important to me and my Jewish life. So, my Mom and I are traveling this summer to Israel to celebrate my becoming a Bat Mitzvah.

I decided to do a chesed project to raise money for a girl living in an orphanage in Netanya to have her own Bat Mitzvah. I plan on going and celebrating with her on her special day, shortly after I arrive in Israel for the first time. I think it is a meaningful way to spend my Bat Mitzvah. I look forward to meeting the girl very much, who will hopefully become a new friend. We seem to have similar interests and I think it will be a truly wonderful experience to share with her. Plus, this will be my first time in Israel! What could be better than that?

I also plan on visiting my cousins many of whom I have never met before, but my parents have. I also want to visit the final resting place of my great Bubbi who was very dear and special to me. Even though I only knew her for several years, she was a great person and I was so lucky to have known her. (It will also be my Mom's first time visiting her on Har Hamenucha in Jerusalem and she was extremely close to her). I also have another great Safta who is still alive and we actually share the same birthday. I am hoping to be able to see her and spend time with her. I have learned so many wonderful things about my heritage and Israel and I can't wait to see them for myself. It is so exciting and I hope to share some pictures and stories along the way.
